Glorious high definition
The S4 boasts a beautiful high-definition screen with a resolution of 1920 x 1080. The S4 also features an impressive 441 pixels per inch, meaning users will be able to enjoy streaming video and the latest mobile games in gorgeous clarity.

Under the hood
Although the screen size and pixel density impressed many experts at the device’s launch event, what’s behind the sleek, glossy exterior is perhaps even more noteworthy. The S4 comes with 2GB of RAM, a feature only rivaled by RIM’s Blackberry Z10 and Google’s flagship Nexus 4. The new device is certainly no slouch when it comes to its hard drive, either, as the S4 features 16GB of storage space as standard, with 32GB and 64GB options available.

The S4′s processor also deserves a mention. There will be two different versions of the S4 – one with the Qualcomm Snapdragon Fusion Pro processor and one with the Samsung Exynos 5 Octa system chip. The Exynos 5 Octa runs at 1.6GHz, faster than all other comparable smartphones on the market, while the Qualcomm chip clocks in at an incredible 1.9GHz, setting the standard for future devices.

Samsung’s latest phone also boasts a 13 megapixel rear-facing camera and plenty of new camera features, significantly outpacing other smartphone cameras and making the S4 an ideal choice for amateur shutterbugs.

New innovations
So, the S4 looks great and certainly packs a punch in terms of its specifications, but the phone’s special features are what really set the device apart from the crowd during this week’s launch event. Leaked videos that surfaced on the web prior to the launch turned out to have been the real McCoy, as the S4 does indeed feature an innovative new Smart Pause function that tracks users’ eye movements using an optical sensor. When the device detects that the user has looked away from the screen, any streaming video playing on the phone will pause automatically.

Connect to Wi-Fi

If you’re in a bad coverage area, your phone will continually look for service. While this feature can be useful, it quickly drains your battery. There’s no way to shut this option off without either powering down your device or providing it with a signal.

Smartphones read Wi-Fi connections as cellular networks, so simply connecting to the internet can save your battery. Many businesses offer free wireless service, so take advantage of any area that has an unprotected server to conserve power.

Restrict GPS access
Some popular apps request access to your phone’s location. This is something of a security concern, as companies can track your every move, but it also drains your battery by keeping your GPS feature active.

You can restrict access to your location for every app by accessing its settings. Consider turning the feature off for frivolous programs like games and only activate it when you need to use a directional guide or check the local weather.

Turn off auto updates
Apps check their servers for updates, but when programs go online, they drain your battery by forcing your phone to work.

Similar to the GPS feature, you can adjust settings for individual apps. Turn off automatic updates and check for them while your smartphone is charging so you don’t waste power while downloading.

Turn the brightness down
As with all devices, smartphones have better display quality when they’re bright. Unfortunately, internal lighting systems quickly chew through power and can leave you without a phone.

You can turn your brightness down manually. Additionally, many smartphones have a feature that automatically adjusts the settings based on your current environment. This also reduces ocular strain when staring at your device for prolonged periods.

These are some of the more common strategies that people use to save their phones’ batteries. What tips work well for you?

The iPhone 5 has a taller display (4 inches), lighter weight (3.95 ounces), a faster processor and 4G LTE capabilities. It also comes with a new dock connector designed to take the new size of the iPhone 5 into account. This means that all accessories used with previous iPhone models are now obsolete on the iPhone 5.

At first glance, the iPhone 5 looks very similar to the iPhone 4S with the exception of the taller screen – which is something that the online community immediately fixated on through memes such as the ones seen here:

It seems that a lot of people, including Olympic gymnast McKayla Maroney, were not impressed with the newest model of the iPhone.

On the other hand, there are a lot of people – at least 2 million of these people – who have been waiting for this announcement from Apple with baited breath.

In fact, with smartphones now capable of doing so many different activities, we wondered what were the most popular, common uses of smartphones these days. So, we set up a poll on the Newegg Facebook page last week asking just that question – what do you spend the most time doing on your smartphone?

Out of the more than 2,500 votes we received, texting came in first and web browsing was second. Social networking was a distant third and phone calls came in fourth, barely edging out playing games and emails.

3. Angry Birds – Use a slingshot to shoot the birds at the pigs hiding behind crates and walls. If you get the right bird, you can destroy everything in your path. As you go up the levels, the difficulty increases but it still is one of the most popular, easy-to-play games today. If you’re bored of the regular Angry Birds game, try Angry Birds Space or Angry Birds Rio.

4. Fruit Ninja – Swipe across the fruit with your fingers. If you swipe a bomb, you lose. If you drop three fruit, you lose. Get a high enough score and unlock new blades, backgrounds, and more. The best part of this game? It’s not only optimized for smartphones, but also optimized for most tablets so you can enjoy Fruit Ninja on any mobile device.

5. Temple Run – Swiping is the only action needed to play this game. Swipe to turn, jump and slide! The goal is to keep running for as long as you can. Collect coins to buy power-ups and unlock new characters!

What games do you play like playing on your mobile devices after a long school/work day?

Using a mobile device has become second nature for most. A Pew research study found that approximately one-quarter of people are using their smartphones to send texts, check social networks and browse the web during commercial breaks, rather than channel-surfing. This is what multi-screen viewing is all about – always having a device on and in your face, providing advertising space and a constant stream of entertainment.

This explains why phones like the Galaxy SIII, the Galaxy Note and the HTC One are offering displays pushing the 5-inch mark, catering to consumers who will probably eventually stream television programs to their phones from sites like Hulu or Netflix. These “phablet” devices, functioning as a smartphone but nearly big enough to pass for a Nexus 7, are combining the best aspects of both devices into one package that may someday dominate the television experience as well.

This idea is nothing new to computer enthusiasts. Many companies and individuals utilize multiple monitors enabling them to multitask and potentially, be more productive. Perhaps this is the mindset which has carried over to the television world.

Here are six of the top tech trends expected by the experts for 2012:

1. Multi-function devices. Never before have consumers had the option to forgo carrying numerous entertainment devices – until now. Consumers have begun to use their smartphone as their main device. The smartphones hitting the market are replacing a person’s digital camera, laptop and video games. As technology improves and a device’s ability increases, more and more consumers will rely on one unit to do everything.
2. Social networks grow to distribute content. Twitter and Facebook are primarily working as a discovery platform for users. However, experts believe that the increase in users and platform capabilities will enable more content consumption to be driven from those sites. It also remains to be seen how new sites like Pinterest will impact the social media landscape.
3. Screens get innovative. As users become more reliant on their mobile devices, the clarity, resolution and durability becomes important. Therefore, manufacturers have introduced more and more touch screen devices that are sensitive to the users’ touch and needs. Another high-profile fad is flexible devices. Nokia and Samsung have both hinted they will release phones with bendable screens this year.
4. Voice control. While voice controlled devices have been around for years, they were never really user friendly or accurate – ruining the mystique of the entire project. However, with Apple’s Siri on the iPhone 4S, voice controlled devices may soon be flooding the market as a very feasible advancement.
5. More tablets and ultrabooks. The competition between tablets and ultrabooks will heat up in 2012 as more consumers turn to these popular mobile devices. Intel is making a huge push behind ultrabooks this year but this week’s announcement of the new iPad 3 has some experts wondering what the impact will be on other tablet brands and notebook sales in general.
6. Mobile payments. There are already a few applications out there that allow a user to purchase merchandise or services with their phones where permitted. Consumers have been slow to adopt them for fear of security risks, but that may change as the convenience of these processes lure vendors to these applications more and more.
